Create, find and open a client

Create a client or household, link the adviser and return to the correct record.

Before you start

  • Sign in with access to the relevant practice and client records.

  • Have the primary client’s name, optional partner’s name and intended adviser ready.

1. Search before creating

Use Search clients in the top bar and enter at least two characters. Choose the correct result after checking the household name and adviser. You can also use the Clients list: enter a name in Search by Client, then narrow the results with All advisers or All statuses. Previous, Next and Page size help you work through the results. Selecting a client name opens their workspace.

2. Open the new-client form

Select Add New in the top bar, then New Client. Enter Primary client name. Add Partner name (optional) only when this is a household record for both people. Check spelling now so you can recognise the record in later searches.

3. Check the adviser and practice

Choose the intended Adviser from the available list. Practice is read-only and follows the adviser selection or your available profile details. If the adviser or practice looks wrong, stop and resolve it before creating the client. Do not choose a different adviser simply to get past an error.

4. Create and check the record

Select Create and select and wait for the form to finish. When you start from Finley’s chat welcome flow, the action may instead be Create and start chat. The destination depends on where you started: the client workspace or Finley with that client selected. Confirm the name and adviser before continuing.

To create your client, select the Add New icon from the top navbar

From the dropdown, select New Client

Enter the client’s name and, if applicable, the partner’s name.

Where there are multiple advisers in the one practice, you can link the client/s to the adviser using the Adviser dropdown.

Click Create and select

After creation, check that the correct client has opened.

5. Add the remaining information

Open Client Details to complete the profile, or Fact Find to work through the household information. Creating the record captures the names and adviser connection; it is only the beginning of the fact-finding process. Use the Client and Partner controls where available to check each person separately.

Check before you finish

  • Reopen the client from search and confirm it is the record you just created.

  • Check that the partner belongs to the same household and that the adviser/practice are correct.

If something does not work

  • No results: clear adviser and status filters and try a shorter name. Your access scope can affect which clients appear.

  • Adviser details unavailable: reopen the form as prompted. If the problem remains, ask your administrator to check the adviser’s profile.

  • Creation error: keep the error text and search again before retrying, to avoid accidentally making a duplicate.
